The Faculty of Engineering and Sciences of Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez has great pleasure in inviting researchers to apply for up to four (4) open rank faculty positions in the area of Statistics to start on March 1st 2020.

The Faculty of Engineering and Sciences (FES) of Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI)

UAI is a prestigious private university in Chile. Founded as a business school in 1953, in 1988 it started operating as a university. At present, it has 12,400 students in 8 different schools located in two campuses: one in Santiago, the capital city of Chile, and the other in the coastal city of Viña del Mar.

The FES is a leading school of engineering, which has experienced a rapid growth over the last 10 years. It has 3,700 students and 91 full-time professors, offering 7 undergraduate engineering degrees, in addition to its MSc and PhD programs. FES brings together an open-minded community of scholars who combine fundamental and applied research meant to develop creative and innovative projects. These projects are expected not only to advance the frontier knowledge, but also to contribute toward developing solutions that can help to reach sustainable development goals.

Recently, the FES took a leading role in the newly created Data Observatory (DO), a non-profit organization whose mission is to acquire, process and store in digital media complex data sets generated by public or private institutions. Due to their large amount, their nature and complexity, these sets require curatorship, exploration, visualization, and analysis that makes the availability of such data easier for the purposes of the development of science, technology, innovation, knowledge and its applications in the economic field. UAI is one of the four founding members of DO, together with Amazon Web Services, the Chilean Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Economy.
Job description FES seeks outstanding researchers who have expertise in both theory and applications, and who show great interest in working with real data. The hiring committee especially encourages applications from scholars working in the areas of machine learning, statistical learning theory, algorithm design, statistical computing, Bayesian statistics, text analytics, big data analytics, high-dimensional statistics or spatial analytics.

Faculty members at FES are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to statistics and related fields, in Spanish and/or English, supervise theses, conduct high quality research, publish in top international journals, submit research proposals to national, international and multinational funding organizations, and participate in outreach activities. FES also encourages and welcomes technological transfer and research in collaboration with the industry and the government. The salary depends on the
qualifications of the chosen candidate. As a reference, a starting Assistant Professor should expect a basic annual remuneration ranging between US$ 48.000 and US$ 65.000 (before taxes). This salary does not include potential stipends from grants, startup packages or research contracts.

Candidates need not be fluent in Spanish at the moment of applying. They must have excellent oral and written communication skills, a great aptitude for teamwork, and a marked academic interest in high quality education and research. Requirements include a PhD degree in a field related to Statistics or Data Science.

At FES we believe that diversity broadens our research scope and enhances the quality of our education, so we highly encourage women, international scholars and minorities to apply for this position.
