Medical statistician

Institute of Applied Health Research, University of Birmingham

Closing date: 20th March 2019

We are seeking to recruit 2 medical statisticians to join the Biostatistics, Evidence Synthesis and Test Evaluation (BESaTE) Group within the Institute of Applied Health Research (IAHR).  The Test Evaluation Research Group (TERG) within BESaTE is world-renown for its expertise in evaluating medical tests, providing statistical expertise in the design and analysis of applied health research projects, developing methodology and running international training courses.

The post holders will conduct statistical and methodological research on a variety of projects specialising in diagnosis and prognosis working alongside our established team of statisticians in TERG and the Biostatistics Team.

TERG leads the Diagnostics and Biomarkers theme within the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). We work with clinicians studying three different inflammatory diseases to develop, design and deliver portfolios of test research studies, and to advance the methodology behind early evaluative studies.  One post will be closely affiliated with this programme of work.

Our group’s research programme addresses a wide and interesting range of medical problems of practical relevance to patients, carers and health care providers. Our research covers topics from screening and diagnosis of cancer, diagnosis of infectious diseases in low and middle income countries, to monitoring progression of chronic disease.  We work alongside experts from across the UK and internationally, including the World Health Organisation and Cochrane. We are involved in primary research studies, systematic reviews of studies, and developing and evaluating methodology for both. The second post will be affiliated with several of these projects.

Both post holders will have opportunities to contribute to the group’s teaching activities.

You will have a higher degree in medical statistics or equivalent experience, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Knowledge and experience in using Stata or SAS would be an advantage.

The responsibilities of the post are commensurate with those expected of a Grade 7 research fellow but we will also consider applications from individuals with less experience at Grade 6 with commensurate reduction in post duties, responsibilities and salary. These are full-time positions for a fixed-term period of 2 years in the first instance. Starting salary for grade 7 is normally in the range £30,395 to £39,609, with potential progression once in post to £42,036 a year. Grade 6 salary is normally in the range £27,025 to £29,515, with potential progression once in post to £33,199 a year.
