The Medical Research Council (MRC) Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) at UCL is a centre of excellence for clinical trials, meta-analyses and epidemiological studies. It is committed to strengthening and expanding the evidence base for healthcare nationally and internationally. It also develops methodology to improve the design, conduct and analysis of clinical studies, and hosts one of the MRC’s five regional Hubs for Trials Methodology Research. The Unit currently has around 230 staff.

Main purpose of the job

This is an exciting opportunity for a methodological statistician to develop their career in the UK’s leading trials methodology group.

The post-holder will be a member of the trials methodology programme, developing new methodology for use in the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials. Specific projects to be worked on will depend on the post-holder’s interests and experience, and will be selected from the following or similar projects:

  • Missing data methodology

o Developing, evaluating and disseminating methods for handling missing data due to death in trials across the Institute

o Developing a framework for writing trial-specific guidance documents about missing data

o Improving MRC CTU procedures for recording the reasons for missing outcome data, in order to support missing data assumptions at analysis

  • Treatment changes

o Developing and implementing statistical methods for adjusting for treatment changes in MRC CTU trials

  • Trial design

o Evaluating the use of factorial designs in platform and MAMS trials

o Planning subgroup analyses

  • Network meta-analysis

o Developing methods for exploring inconsistency

o Developing models relating treatment effects to underlying risk

 

Duties and responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing methodological ideas under the guidance of the line manager.

The appointee will be expected to:

  • Agree suitable projects with the line manager
  • Review the methodological literature around selected projects
  • Work collaboratively with methodologists and trialists
  • Present work at conferences
  • Contribute to, and lead where appropriate, writing papers in collaboration with other team members
  • Facilitate the implementation of new methods in standard software (e.g. the statistics package Stata)
  • Disseminate the work so that it is widely used within and outside the MRC CTU

 

Key requirements

 

The successful candidate will have a MSc or PhD in Medical Statistics or a closely related subject; sound understanding of medical statistics; interest in methodological development in a biomedical environment; and will work effectively with methodologists and trialists.
